Steve Harms of West Valley City, Utah, and Matt Smith of Altoona, Iowa, rolled the 11th and 12th perfect games of the 2012 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships.
Harms, a 46-year-old left-hander, tossed his 300 at the Baton Rouge River Center on April 19 to become the 23rd bowler in 109 years of USBC Open Championships competition with two perfect games on the tournament lanes. His first came at the 2011 event in Reno, Nev., and he is the fifth person to accomplish the feat in consecutive years.
Harms finished with games of 190, 259 and 300 for a 749 series and teamed with Thomas E. Lightcap of Roy, Utah, for a 1,315 doubles total. Hugh Miller of Mercer Island, Wash., and Adam Barta of Girard, Ohio, lead Regular Doubles with 1,429.
“Last year’s was really special because in the state of Utah, shooting 300 at Nationals solidifies you a little more as a competitive bowler,” said Harms, who made his 16th Open Championships appearance and added 583 in singles and 565 in team for a 1,897 all-events total.
“This one was special because of the convention-center setting. It’s not an established bowling center like the Stadium, so it’s a little bit tougher. It’s definitely a great feeling.”
Smith’s 300 came in his second game of singles April 24 on the way to a 756 set, which is eighth in Regular Singles. Henry Teetz III of West Allis, Wis., leads with 800.
Smith, a 36-year-old right-hander making his 13th tournament appearance, added 663 in team and 631 in doubles for a 2,050 all-events total to help Fran’s Pro Shop 1 of Waterloo, Iowa, into fourth place in Team All-Events with a 9,795 total.
Gordon Kilpatrick added a 1,989 all-events effort for Fran’s Pro Shop 1 and was joined by Kurt Krull (1,979), Joseph Engelkes (1,889) and Ronald Tragord (1,888). The group also moved into eighth place in Regular Team with a 3,239 effort April 23.
